Self Taught
Check out this Blast one on one exclusive interview
with Self Taught one of the producers on The One Kemist's
forthcoming album. Self Taught is the mastermind that
constructed the critically praised underground banger
"The Work Out".

The Giant Blast: Why do you call yourself Mr. Self Taught?
Self Taught: I call myself Self Taught actually! No Mr. in front! The reason for the name is because one only learns what one teaches himself.

The Giant Blast: How would you describe your sound as a beatmaker?
Self Taught: I describe myself as a boom bap beat maker. Skill in the trade of that ol' boom bap.

The Giant Blast: How long have you been making beats?
Self Taught: I have been making beats for about 10 years.

The Giant Blast: What do you use to make your beats?
Self Taught: I use the MPC 2000xl, a turntable and a whole lot of vinyl.
The Giant Blast: Are there any tricks that you would like to share with upcoming beat makers on how to properly get down with MPC?
Self Taught: Yeah. Sample all your drums from vinyl records!

The Giant Blast: Do you plan on getting anymore equipment or tools to assist you with your beat making?
Self Taught: Yeah. I plan on getting pro tools and I have been thinking about a sound module.

The Giant Blast: What type of records do you like to sample?
Self Taught: Any and every thing that has something funky on it.

The Giant Blast: Getting back on the topic of other beat makers, what other producers do you look up to or have some sort of influence on you?
Self Taught: DJ Premier, Pete Rock, J Dilla, The Alchemist, Havoc, Showbiz, DITC, Moss, Marco Polo, Boonie Mayfield, Large Professor, Marley Marl, 9th Wonder, Krhysis and any other beat maker with samples.

The Giant Blast: What artists have you worked with so far?
Self Taught: So far I have worked with Mr. FP who's out of Brooklyn, NY, The One Kemist who I have like four beats on his upcoming debut Words From the Soul. I just recently gave some beats to D.R. Universal for his upcoming project.

The Giant Blast: Who would you like to work with in the future?
Self Taught: I would like to work with anyone that's nice with the lyrics and has some type of strong grind to them as well as someone who is compatible with me who is in my lane.

The Giant Blast: Speaking of the future, what are your plans for the future?
Self Taught: To blow up the spot with more boom beats and also put out my own producer album, which will be coming soon.

The Giant Blast: What advice would you give these artists that are out here trying to get their music out?
Self Taught: Grind Hard! No doubt.

The Giant Blast: How can artists get in touch with you for beats?

The Giant Blast: What does Mr. Self Taught get into besides music?
Self Taught: I also make DVDs that feature Hip Hop artists in Charlotte and beyond. My first DVD was ON THE GRIND WITH THE ONE KEMIST. In addition, I am coming out with a DVD called Right n Exact TV presents Supreme Interviews which is a documentary/ interview with Nation of Gods and Earths from South Carolina which I am a part of. That's my Universal Family.

The Giant Blast: Now on to The One Kemist our Blast featured artist, what would you like to say about him?
Self Taught: The One Kemist is a grinder. Hard worker. Skillful lyricist. Humble dude. I'm meet him through Empress Journee.

The Giant Blast: To someone that may have never heard of The One Kemist how would you pitch it or introduce his music to them?
Self Taught: Real Hip Hop at it's finest.

The Giant Blast: The DJs that are members of The Giant Blast are really feeling "The Work Out", to those that haven't heard the track yet how would you describe it?
Self Taught: High energy!

The Giant Blast: Thanks for your time Self Taught is there anything you would like to plug or any shout outs?
Self Taught: Yeah! Peace to the Gods and Earths. Shout Out to The One Kemist, Team of One Records, D.R. Universal, No Question Music Group.
