On Dec. 10th 2011, Ketchmore Kids held it's 7th Annual Christmas Toy Drive in front of Master Kutz Beauty & Barber on Ashley Rd. in Charlotte, NC. The event was to raise money and toys for underprivileged children in the city. The Giant Blast, Legendary hip hop recording artist Special Ed, other special invited guests, recording artists, and local radio stations such as My 92.7 FM and WPEG Power 98 came out to show support and lend a helping hand. Check out some of the footage from the event at the videos below. There were live performances, free food and free hair cuts for the children. Check them out.

On Dec. 16th 2011, Slim Dunkin (whose real name is Mario Hamilton) a rising Atlanta based rapper, and member of Brick Squad Monopoly was shot and killed in an Atlanta recording studio right before preparing for a music video. Associates of the rapper have been sending condolences through Twitter.

DJ Colossal's I-Pod Pick: Lova J. "If I Only Had One Wish"

This week's I-Pod pick is on South Carolina soul singer Lova J's single "If I Only Had One Wish". This song is about a crush a man has on a particular woman that he wants to be with so badly, but she is with someone else. So the vocalist wishes that he could be with her instead. The song conveys this message smoothly without the artist coming off as some love sick stalker or emotionally deprived love beggar. What really makes this song so great in my opinion is that the track has a real "old school" early to mid 90s R&B vibe to it, and that's good to hear when most of the R&B songs coming out today have a real heavy synthetic, robotic futuristic Euro pop sound to it. The guest rapper by the name of G.P. really adds flavor to the beginning of the song and does a great job opening the song up for Lova J. This is a nice song to sit back, relax and chill to while listening.

Celsius911 has a new mixtape coming out titled 11/11/11 set to released on the 11th day of the 11th month of this year (2011). The Giant Blast recently got a hold of the artist to discuss this latest project in this quick one on one interview. Here is what Celsius911 had to say.

The Giant Blast: What can listeners expect to hear on the 11/11/11 mix tape?

Celsius911: They can expect to hear new music from me exploring all subjects that everybody facing right now. Things that everybody goes through and deals with. Partying, political, economic, sex. Its gonna be a lil bit of everything on there. Expect it to be 1 of a kind just like the date 11/11/11.

What inspired you to do this project?

Ive always felt a strong connection to the time 11:11. I've always been drawn to the significance of that number on a spiritual level so it would only seem right to release a free project to the people on the date 11/11/11. Its the only time we'll see that date in our lifetime so it only makes sense to release records that I care about, made for people that i care about on that date.

Who did you work with for this project?

I got a few records on there with producer Zukhits. Also did a few joints over some popular instrumentals. As for artists; I got Bryce from Spit Hot Fire on there, got a female artist by the name of Moanz on there and a few other talented artists that I enjoy working with.

What plans do you have after the 11/11/11 mixtape?

Definitely got the mix tape Diary 1.5 coming out late Dec. early Jan. A lot of shows, videos and interviews. Also more mix tapes. On the grind heavy.

You have been getting lots of praise from DJs such as DJ Colossal and others recently how do you feel about that?

I'm happy about that and really appreciate it. It's good that the hard work is paying off and being appreciated. I just wanna continue to work hard and keep making music that people like.

What are your plans for 2012?

Mix tapes, shows, videos, big records, surprise collabos and hopefully another album by the end of 2012. Not slowing down.

The Giant Blast: How long have you been spinning?

DJ Scrill: I have been spinning for almost 18 years off and on. My Grandmother purchased my first set of turntables and a mixer for my 15^th birthday and I have been grinding ever since.

What inspired you to want to DJ?

Hip hop itself and seeing cats like Jazzy Jeff and Kid Capri do their thing. Those guys were some of the pioneers in my early years and I wanted to cut, scratch and be the life of the party like they did.

You are a member of Slip-N-Slide DJs, Future Star DJs, Lord Gang, Derrty DJs and Shadyville DJs are you a member of any other record pools or DJ coalitions?

My other DJ affiliations are 704 DJs which is based in the Carolinas and the A&R DJs coalition.

How do you feel about digital record pools such as Digi Waxx or The Giant Blast?

Digital record pools are key because we are in a digital age. Vinyl is very limited now and even what we mix on now is primarily digital with Mp3’s. So digital pools give you access to get what’s hot immediately and direct from download.

You also do promotion and marketing for artists yourself, correct? Could you tell us a little more about the services you provide?

That is correct I do marketing and promotions. I specialize in mixtape promotion and production, commercial and internet radio promotion and viral and social networking. Anything relating to promoting and developing brands I either do personally or I can consult and point someone in the right direction to achieve their goal.

What projects or mixtapes are you currently working on?

Right now I have the Big Bang 2 mixtape with Mr. Boom Boom Bang that is out in the streets right now. I am working on a new series called Unauthorized that will be released in the very near future. Both artists on my label will be releasing street albums as well. Rod D will be dropping I Am Arkansas early November 2011 and 2 Piece Effortless Win is scheduled for late 3^rd quarter as well.

How did you link up with Mr. Boom Boom Bang?

The situation with Mr. Boom Boom Bang came about because I have known his management for a good minute. They hit me up to work with them on pushing his single “Fasure” which is blazing at mix show as we speak and we decided to couple that with the Mixtape.

What would you like to say about Mr. Boom Boom Bang's mixtape hosted by yourself, The Big Bang 2?

The Big Bang 2 mixtape is a monumental project for Mr. Boom Boom Bang. The tape really puts his creativity and movement in the forefront. The Big Bang 2 was one of those projects that I look at now and say “yeah, that project made sense”. When you can work a project from a single to a complete street album and have the people in charge work as a cohesive unit, magic tends to happen at that point.

In your personal opinion what is one of your favorite Mr. Boom Boom Bang songs?

One of my personal favorites off the Big Bang 2 Mixtape is “Your Day”. It is one of those smooth records that speaks to the ladies. That is always a win in my opinion when you make records that the female persuasion can enjoy.

Who are some of your favorite artists right now?

On the main stream side I would say Yo Gotti, Lil Chuckee, 2 Chainz, Dorrough Music. Independent artists of course Mr. Boom Boom Bang, J-Slim, Rod D, 2 Piece, LA Da Boom Man the lists goes on and on. Any artists who are out there doing their thing are my favorites ya dig.

What are some mistakes you see up and coming artists making right now, and what advice would you give them?

The biggest mistake I see artists making is spending money with the wrong people to promote them. Artists are letting people sell them dreams and some people take advantage of indies that don’t know the game. Another mistake is artists attempting to cut the DJ out of the loop. The DJ spins your record and most of the time can work your record. Overcharging the DJ whether it be shows or to get on remix records etc. is a huge mistake. In a lot of cases you need to do it for the DJ on a trade off or promo type situation, real talk.

In your opinion which is the worst kind of artist, an artist with no talent but a lot of drive and financial backing to promote themselves, OR a very talented artist with no money, and doesn't believe in investing into marketing and promotion, and believes that they will make it on just talent alone? Which one of these artists in your opinion is the worst to deal with or is in the worst position?

The worst to deal with is going to be the artist with a lot of financial backing and no talent. That is because all the money in the world can help push to a certain level but the artist has to have the talent and creativity to make a hit record. It starts with the music first. If the music is garbage expect the end result to be just that “Hot Garbage”. The artist in the worst position is the artist with talent and no funding. This is the music business that you are trying to make it in. The music business takes funding to properly succeed. That is just the bottom line of the issue. You have to have some sort of budget to achieve being able to recoup what you put in not just financially but with your time and effort as well.

What's in the future for DJ Scrill?

You can expect DJ Scrill to continue to do what he does best. That is being and all around music industry professional. In the coming months and years DJ Scrill will be building the “Dj Scrill” brand and attempting to insure the success of the artists on his label and any and all other artists and individuals he works with.

The Blast Blog recently set down with a Michael Bentley of Spin Doctor PR LLC for an in depth interview, to talk about the services his company offers to artists and labels, hooking up with handling marketing for FIFA as well as other topics concerning the music industry.

The Blast Blog: You have a bachelors degree in Entertainment Business and you have been apart of the industry for over 10 years, what inspired you to choose this field as a career?

Michael Bently of Spin Doctor PR LLC: I grew up in the entertainment business. My mother sang briefly and later took on a management role of a club. I have met people such as John Gotti, Frank Sinatra, Miami artists like Luke, at a young age. We traveled a lot, and I just grew up wanted to work for the major labels. The big wigs as I call them now, but as I worked "inside", I saw what it was about, so I started my own company to help Indie artists, artists with talent.

Your Spin Doctor PR Firm specializes in online marketing and publicity for artists, and bands... does your company offer any offline, or physical street team services as well?

As of right now only our FM and College Music, but hand to hand flyers, no.

What are some of the major labels that your company has worked for?
Every major label in some sort of way or fashion.

What are some of the smaller, or independent record companies that your company has worked for?

Too many to name.

Has your company ever helped an unsigned artist get signed, if so...who?

Yes, but sometimes those people don't want to get us out there like that, cause they have a team of people, but if you know a rapper who has a Gun that might be a machine and rhymes with Belly, then you might know a few of the people we mess with. Also if you can figure out that riddle, you might be able to see what label connections we have.

How did your company end up working with FIFA?

They contacted me for some grassroots things here in the states. I don't even like Soccer. Well it isn't bad, but I did watch it for 9 days and saw only one goal. It was such a success that they rehired us, which was a big deal for us!

Has there ever been a client or an account that your company had to turn down? If so, why?

Everyday we turn down musicians. If the music isn't up to par, not mixed (although we offer that service through a client), then yes we turn people down. Some of these "musicians" need to keep their day jobs. Also the models we get. WOW, not everybody should be a model.

In your opinion which is worse... an untalented artist or horrible band that actually has the budget and wants to use the Spin Doctor service or a very talented (yet hard headed and stubborn) artist or band that feels that they don't need any promotion and their talent alone (and the mp3s on their myspace page) is all they need to one day be successful? Which is the worst?
That is a really good question. The real artistic musicians, the best, they are usually just great at music, not promotions. That is why labels, people, bands, hire us in the first place, cause they understand, hey I play the guitar better than anybody, but maybe I am not the best at promoting/marketing. As for the sh***y artist, if they have money, sadly, they can go somewhere. As we don't take every artist, if an artist has money, then usually it is money that they have saved up, not family money like Tom Hanks Son, but that means that they believe they can do it, they just don't know how. So we can help with that, get them studio musicians to help, singing lessons, ghost writers, etc. It is a world where the kids want to be Kim Kardashian, sadly, so a ton of people want to be famous for NO F**KING REASON. So we deal with that everyday.

In your opinion what is one of the most common mistakes you see artists make, and what should they do differently?

A few things. Not getting a song mixed/mastered but they have a wrap on
their van of their mix tape. That baffles me every time. There is a list of things way to long to list here.

In my opinion this record is bigger than the I-Pod (or any portable device), this record is most certainly for the clubs and is guaranteed to get a party started! The hook is real catchy (as most dance songs are), while J*Midd and the Ying Yang Twins chant "I'm choosing, eeny, meeny, miny, moe, I'm choosing eeny, meeny, miny moe, who wanna roll with me tonight!", using the popular children's counting rhyme style that kids say when "choosing" someone to be "it" for games such as "Tag" and "One, Two, Three, Go", and the Ying Yang Twins are certainly known for taking popular children's rhymes and turning them into hit club songs. The Giant Blast: How would you describe yourself as an artist?

J*Midd: Very Unique. 99% of rap and even mainstream music these days could be categorized as explicit. Stuff our kids and our youth shouldn't be listening to.. I have found a way to deliver simple, positive and CLEAN music that still has the mainstream feel that can rock a club. The fact that I have parents in my corner wanting to get my CD for their kids is a very good feeling. I'm here to set standards and display positive messages to the generations to come, our kids. Also, there is not really a white artist that raps, sings and song writes. Em is all rap, Justin Beiber is very poppish. I have found a way to hit both mainstream and the streets. This hasn't been done before so when it all drops I feel it'll catch the industry off guard.

How would you describe one of your latest singles "Choosing" featuring Ying Yang Twins?

At the end of the day everyone knows who the Ying Yang Twins are. I did a lot of traveling and a lot of shows with them, including our big shows at Club La Vela in Panama City, Florida for Spring Break week for the past 2 years. So eventually I spoke with the Twins and their manager and we set it up to do a song together. This is definitely more of a Ying Yang style song. Very up tempo and just a song for the ladies.

Other than the Ying Yang Twins, who did you work with for this single?

I wrote the song awhile back. Went and picked Kane up and we recorded it. Shortly after D-Roc finished his part to complete the song this song was produced from my hometown producers who I started out with, Ronnie and Larson Productions. We later remixed it to a DJ Shocka beat who is one of my international DJ's, HE IS ONLY 15!

Who all have you worked with in the past?

I have had the blessing to work with and do shows with a lot of big name artists. Flo Rida, Travis Porter, Roscoe Dash, TQ (formerly of Cash Money), Gorilla Zoe, Twista, Ying Yang Twins, DJ Unk, Raheem The Dream, 69 Boyz, 95 South, F.L.Y. Shop Boyz, Pastor Troy, BoneCrusher, and many more. I currently have features with Ying Yang Twins, Gorilla Zoe and 8Ounz, DJ Unk, Montana Da Mac and the Legend Raheem The Dream.

Who would you like to work with in the future?

There are several people I would enjoy working with in the future. My favorite artist growing up was Atlanta artist Jody Breeze. He was the first artist I ever started following and studied, because he very hot during the time i really started learning how to write hip hop style music. Artists who compliment my style would be people like T-Pain, Flo Rida, Lupe Fiasco, Drake, David Guetta, Justin Timberlake, and a few others.

What projects do you have coming out soon?

Several projects are in the works for me right now. My main theme is "God Over Money" I'll always push that as my brand because that's how I try and live my life. I am a very strong Christian and keeping God #1 on my priority list is key. That's where the God Over Money phrase comes from. My album will drop first quarter of 2012, titled Redefinition of Party. I feel that the party scene is very boring and getting very repetitious these days. I feel its time to switch it up a little bit, so that's why you will see what I mean by redefining out to PARTY.

I have several singles I will be dropping possibly an album before the album by the end of this year (2011) really building the buzz for the album. I do a lot of song writing for myself as well as others. A lot of my stuff that I have written for other people will also be coming out, building my credit as a song writer in this industry.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

Lord willing, I see myself as a very established artist and song writer. Worldwide traveling and touring. I would love to be the next Sean Garrett or Ne-Yo as a song writer/Ghost writer by then.

Speaking of the future where do you see the music industry as a whole within the next five years?

I pray the music industry takes a turn for the better in the next 5 years. I feel the message of music today is just too negative and derogative for our kids to be feeding their minds with. I feel music will definitely be more electronic, dubstep, futuristic in 5 years.

Who are some of your inspirations?

My father was a huge inspiration for me. He was with a Christian group called Newsong back in the day. They were inducted into the Contemporary Christian Music Hall of Fame. Watching them pack out big venues was a big reason I got into music like I did. Styles I studied were like I said earlier, Jody Breeze, T-Pain, Flo Rida, David Guetta.

Most of your songs seem to be party or club type of records, do you have any songs that have a different type of tone? Could you describe those songs for us?

People will definitely see different sounding projects from me. My goal is to show off my versatility as an artist. I have chosen to go the party/club route first. I have played acoustic guitar since I was 8 years old. You will def see an acoustic project from J*Midd. I also have been hitting the Rock genre recently, performing with live bands. Definitely will see a Linkin Park meets One Rupublic meets Flo Rida sound soon as well. From Reggaetone to Techno to Dubstep, I plan on doing everything EXCEPT Country music. (laughs)

Is there anything else you would like to plug? Any shout outs?

Shout out to my team, TQ and Kado. High Rock who does all my mixing. JD and My producers I work with. My family who I love so much. Everyone says I would like to thank God. but I would like to take it to another level and say I would like to thank my Savior Jesus Christ who died for me and made everything possible. When none of us deserve anything, He gave us life. Therefore I give him my life and my talents to give credit where its due.

Last but not least I give a very special thanks and shout out to my wonderful manager Miss Veronica T. She has helped mold me into the artist I am today. I have to admit I didn't jump on this single on the first listen, not because I felt that the song was wack or anything like that though. The song just didn't stand out or hit me at first.... but after playing the video back a few times it really began to stick with me. I even found myself singing the "beat it 'till it's wet" part of the hook in the same style that Mr. Boom Boom Bang does throughout my day. I will surely spin the record to get the crowd's reaction to it and if they warm up to it the same way that I eventually did I have no problem getting behind this single. Even if it takes someone awhile to warm up to the actual song, I can't front the beat does give off some "heat". Check out the song and video below.

What made you decide to go with "Let Em Know" as your lead video and single?
Mora: "Let Em Know" was the song the song that changed everything for me. When I made it I know that was the style of music I wanted to pursue. It was only right to have it lead the way.

How would you describe this song?
Mora: Very emotional. I made the song based off of what I felt toward my ex. I wanted to let her know that it wasn't right but didn't know how. Once we broke up the emotion left from the relationship transferred into the song.

Who did you work with for the video and for the actual song?
Mora: Great up and coming director Theshay West, also my stylist JD Carter. The producer of the song also had a part in the music, Fame.

What are your plans for the rest of 2011?
Mora: Build my fan base and get ready for the world to see Mora in 2012. Everything I do this year is in preparation for next year.

Is there anything else you would like to plug?
Mora: Just be ready for a new style of music to hit the scene. I plan on bringing real music back!

Confessions of a new body. When I started my quest to get fit I was hovering around 200 lbs but because I ‘carried it well’ I was telling friends and family that I was somewhere around 170 and wearing size 10’s. In fact I was mostly size 12. Ethnic women are blessed. We have these awesome shapes and curves that can easily be shifted and accentuated so I pulled it off, or so I thought. Leave it to someone who pulls no punches to steer me right though. When I was gearing up to release my debut novel, Be Without You, I decided I wanted to be the diva that I was writing about. Fit, passionate and stylish. I sat down with renowned author Omar Tyree to discuss my ambitions but was instead put off by how astonished he was by my eating ability. I was embarrassed as he told the waiter that he didn’t get a chance to taste the mussels Josephine because I’d eaten them all. And he wasn’t lying. Sure when you lose weight you should ultimately do it for yourself but that look of disbelief that a 5’2 girl would put away two appetizers solo was the kick in the pants I needed. When I started my journey I was a size 12, I am now fitting toddler ages (not sizes)2-4. I revel at the small dresses that hug every dangerous curve. I love the look of slim jeans and stilettos even more. The more you lose, the more you’ll love it. Make a decision and throw some deuces up to the pounds.

The Giant Blast Network is a new social networking site designed to bridge the gap between recording artists, D.J.s and music lovers.

Membership is required to use all the site’s features, but all you have to do is provide your e-mail address (which will remain anonymous to other viewers at your request) and answer 2 simple questions. No need to provide the site with other information, or give a DNA sample like other social websites, and although it’s quite simple to join, The Giant Blast Network's team does have it’s way by identifying spam and bots to regulate the site, and make sure it’s users have a smooth networking experience.

The Site Features
There is a members section that’s easy to navigate through to find other like minded individuals to network with.

Once you join, members are allowed to create their own pages similar to Facebook and Myspace, and if you are already a member of the more larger social networks such as Twitter and Facebook you can even sync your profiles so that when you update one, you update them all at once. No need to log into individual pages to express yourself or get your message across.

Giant Blast Spotlight artists are advertised and promoted on the front page of site.

There is a forum for members to share ideas, and discuss the latest topics among themselves.

Members may also upload their own photos and create their own scrap books to share with their friends online.

There is a Motion Picture Section on the site so that members can upload videos (or re-post you tube videos), and also have their videos viewed and rated by fellow members.

For promoters, you are always welcome to sign up and post upcoming events in the Event section.

There is a section titled “Member Cliques” for members to create their own user groups to share ideas, information and music.

On the front page of The Giant Blast Network there is also a live chat room for members to meet each other and socialize.

The Author: Yes, this is a pretty nice song. The artist has a nice flow.
The Beatmaker: It’s aiight. Not bad, but not that good either. Typical beat from 9th, your usual soul sampled joint, an just your typical lyricist spittin’… he’s nice, but just doesn’t grab me like that.
The White Emcee: It’s ok, I would have murdered this beat though.
The Club DJ: Not feeling it. Kind of boring. The hook doesn’t grab me, nothing about this track moves me.

What do you think about the beat?
The Author: I love this beat. It has a nice melody… the track is real smooth and the artist compliments it well.
The Beatmaker: It’s ok for a 9th Wonder beat. I’d rate it a C. Doesn’t stand out too much, and the drums are just too simple for me. I could have done better.
The White Emcee: This track is sick… this is hip hop for real, but like I said before I would have murdered this beat. I would have done this beat “Justus”.
The Club DJ: Not feeling it, like I said earlier it’s just boring to me. It just don’t move me at all, sorry.

What do you think about this artist?
The Author: The artist is very talented, I love his lyrics. He’s nice to listen to. I’m looking forward to hearing more from this artist.
The Beatmaker: He’s alright, just average to me. I’d have to listen to more songs to really get into him.
The White Emcee: He’s ok… after listening to it more he starts to grow on you, but all I can say for right now is he’s ok.
The Club DJ: I’d have to hear him on something else, he would kill something more energetic if you ask me.

How would you support this record?
The Author: I could share this video link with a few of my friends.
The Beatmaker: Honestly, I wouldn’t. That’s just me.
The White Emcee: I’d have to get back to you on that, but this song sounds more like a mixtape joint than anything. The video isn’t too bad, but just not buzz worthy. Nothing to spread the news about.
The Club DJ: I really can’t get behind this one. It’s not that special to me to be honest. It’s more like an album filler at best.

What are your final thoughts?
The Author: Overall I’d say this is a good song. It’s pure, it’s hip hop. Dope beats, dope rhymes.
The Beatmaker: I’d have to hear him over a variety of stuff, this joint didn’t grab me. I’m not calling it wack, I’m just a picky ass. Lol… like I said before I’d give it a C.
The White Emcee: Just a nice, simple internet jawn. From a scale from one to 10 I’d give it maybe a 6 or 7. Maybe the lowest a 5. I don’t know.
The Club DJ: Going back to my last statement, it’s not special… just an album filler.

I’m DJ Colossal. I am a member of The Giant Blast e-record pool, and each week I will dedicate this section of The Giant Blast e-magazine to write a short review on some of the music I receive through the e-mail blast. Now this section isn’t to critique the music, or over analyze the record, it will just be a quick write up on my personal music picks and sharing my opinion on what makes the record hot in the first place, and hopefully some of my favorites will end up being one of your favorite’s as well.

My I-Pod pick for this week is a YouTube music video by an artist named DiverSe, a member of the Civil Mics Movement. The song is titled “Genius” and is produced by 9th Wonder and it‘s featured on the mixtape Mind of a Lyricist Vol. 3! I am a huge fan of the entire Hall of Justus family, so when I saw that 9th was credited as the man behind the beat on this I was anxious to give it a listen, and I must say that it was well worth the time. 9th Wonder puts together a nice, soul-ed out track that matches perfectly with the artists voice and delivery. DiverSe uses this track to showcase his talent as a lyricist. The video is simple, yet still entertaining to watch and compliments the song. It’s a great visual to get you more familiar with the artist. I cosign this record, and I strongly recommend you all downloading the Mp4 and add it to your I-Pods. Here is the video….

The Giant Blast: What does Jessi Jae Joplin get into outside of music?

Jessi Jae Joplin: Besides music, I am extremely passionate about fashion. I’ve worked in fashion here in LA and also when I lived in New York City for fashion designers and magazines. I definitely have a few fashion “projects” in the works that I’m very excited about!

The Giant Blast: Who do you listen to in your spare time?

Jessi Jae Joplin: I listen to a lot of “oldies” like The Beatles, The Doors, The Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel and Queen. The contemporary music I listen to mostly consists of Phoenix, Miike Snow, Empire of the Sun, Spoon, Passion Pit, MGMT, Daft Punk, Calvin Harris, Gorillaz and Justice. That is just a small portion though. I’m constantly going to festivals and concert and discovering new bands.

The Giant Blast: What type of beats bring out the best in what you do?

Jessie Jae Joplin: I’ve always been really into electronic beats with an 80s flare.

The Giant Blast: Who would you like to work with in the future?

Jessi Jae Joplin: I would absolutely LOVE to work with Calvin Harris. I am such an admirer of his work. Miike Snow (also known as the crazy/amazing production team Bloodshy & Avant) would also be pretty dope to work with. I’m a huge fan of the songs they’ve produced for other artists, not to mention their own band is one of my all time favorites.

The Giant Blast: Speaking of the future, where do you see yourself as an artist in 5 years?

Jessi Jae Joplin: I still want to be heavily involved in music and the arts. Just on a larger scale. A few records under my belt and being involved in fashion design and magazines.

The Giant Blast: Getting back to the present, what are you working on right now?

Jessi Jae Joplin: Right now I’m writing and recording new music, filming a webisode series which will air online this month and also planning a tour!

The Giant Blast: For those that haven't seen you perform live, how would you describe a Jessi Jae Joplin show?

Jessi Jae Joplin: Well every show is different, but what remains constant is the energy we bring to the stage. Our shows are not only fun for the audience, but we have a great time too! We try to interact with the crowd and I definitely bring my wild and crazy personality to the stage :)

What inspired you to rhyme?
Watching dudes freestyle in the staircase of my building in Bronx New York.

How would you describe your style?
Lyrical word play with a bit of Southern Swag.

You also have a label, Race City Records, could you tell us a little bit about that and the artists you have signed?
Race City Records provides musical support for local artists, Dj's and Producers in my area. This includes studio time, photo shoots, Videos, Demos, etc. Right now we are working with Slick Da Prince, J Simi Smooth, Ty Cross, Big Grip, and other independent labels in the area.

What projects are you all working on?

Its hard to say what the future holds for us. I will be satisfied with still being able to make music for our fans and continue to help artists grow.

Speaking of Race City, you also Race... would you tell the fans a little about that?
Yes I do. I am a tire changer for Kevin Harvick Inc in all three Nascar series. The #2 Craftsman truck, the #33 Nationwide car, and the #78 Sprint cup car.

Besides that, what does Da Kaptain get into outside of music?
Not much my time is used up throughout race season. Might find me on the PS3 playing call of duty when I have free time.

Getting back to the music, where do you see yourself as an artist in 5 years?

In 5 years I can see myself running the label full time with a few top ten billboard hits under the belt.

Kandy Kash: Because I'm all about that SWEET MONEY!!

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

I am very in your face and real. Kinda rough around the edges. Very diverse. Hood with a sexy twist.

What type of beats bring out the best in Kandy Kash?

Down south hood bangers and upbeat club hits.

Speaking of beats what producers are you currently working with?

J-Mo of Trak Killaz, Young K of Big Dread ENT and Superstar-O.

Who would you like to work with that you haven't worked with so far?

This is a list that is never-ending. From artists to producers there are 100's of people I want to work with!! Like T.I., Lil Wayne, Kesha, Timbaland, Usher and Kanye West to name a few.

Not only are you an artist, but you are also an Adult Model, do you separate the two or do you use one profession to cross promote the other?

Exactly!! Why try to be 2 separate entities or forces when I'm only 1 person!!? I just happen to be involved in many things, and there is much more than just music & adult modeling. There is also poetry, apparel and mainstream acting. There is no limit to the amount of Kandy one can intake.

What has been some of the highlights of your career as an adult actress and rapper?

Opening up for major artists like T-Pain and Young Bloods, traveling all over the country, being nominated for Best Amateur Poet Worldwide 4 years in a row by The ISP (International Society of Poetry) and being published in Great Poems of The Western World. With many more accomplishments to come!!

What has been on of your worst experiences in the entertainment industry and how did you learn from it?

(laughs) There has been a lot of bad experiences I've come across in this business, but to keep it short and sweet, being promised something that was never to be or sold a dream. This happens a lot in this industry so ladies be aware!! But i've learned to cross my t's, dot my i's and never be scared to ASK QUESTIONS!! If something doesn't seem right, is out of place or is not adding up.. It is probably bogus!!

What's in the future for Race City Records?
Its hard to say what the future holds for us. I will be satisfied with still being able to make music for our fans and continue to help artists grow.

Besides that, what does Da Kaptain get into outside of music?Not much my time is used up throughout race season. Might find me on the PS3 playing call of duty when I have free time.

Getting back to the music, where do you see yourself as an artist in 5 years?

In 5 years I can see myself running the label full time with a few top ten billboard hits under the belt.

The Giant Blast: Why do you call yourselves "Flip Them Guys"?

Sean J: The term "flip" represents my half and Soy's full Filipino heritage.

The Giant Blast: How would you describe yourselves as a unit?

Sean J: FTG is a emcee/producer duo (Me being the emcee and Soy being the producer).. Something like Mobb Deep meets Reflection Eternal. Soy does rap as well, so he'll drop some lines every now and then.

The Giant Blast: What can listeners expect from the two of you musically?

Sean J: Well, Soy and I do work together outside of FTG as well. We first collaborated musically on my latest album, A Tree By Itself. That's how the chemistry sparked. All the tracks we did on there was more of creative content or things that had a little more depth to it. The FTG stuff is mostly just aggressive, arrogant, bragging-rights type of hip hop. We want to give some kind of difference between the two; but at the same time- since we are the same person- still correlate with each other.

The Giant Blast: What project are you two working on?

Sean J: Well since Soy is on military leave, we're not working on anything together officially. Right now, its just me going through my vault of his production (ha ha ha), but I'm currently working on several mixtapes and EPs to build anticipation for my next album, A Man of Means, which is dropping under Domination Recordings. I already have some key production from Soy for that project. As far as Soy, I know he's witting for his solo mixtape, which he'll be recording as soon as he gets back in November.

The Giant Blast: Who else did you get involved with for this project?

Sean J: I think the key feature was the Jae Millz appearance, which ya'll are already familiar with. We also have appearances from some great Ozone (Orlando, FL) emcees like MidaZ the Beast, Shinobi Stalin, Unique Assassin, AmIAm, and Illustrate of Grey Matter. A highlight for me personally was having my dude Daewon on a track, who I originally had a group with back in Hawaii years ago.

The Giant Blast: How would you describe Soy's beats?

Sean J: HERION. They are addictive and you can never get enough. For the fact he hasn't been doing beats for that long, show how he is ahead of a lot of niggas.

The Giant Blast: What's the future looking like for the group?

Sean J: When Soy returns, we'll probably work on the official FTG project. Like I stated before, we just cooking up a lot of solo stuff as well.

Soy: Producers control and influence the direction of a project...beatmakers make beats and issue em out like candy. I see myself as more of an influence to every project I work on.

The Giant Blast: What are some beatmakers that have influenced you?

Soy: Dilla, Primo, Pete Rock, 9th Wonder, Evidence, Alchemist, Babu, Madlib, Danger Mouse, DOOM, amongst many others. I could go on for days haha.

The Giant Blast: What types of music do you like to sample?

Soy: Anything that makes that little monkey in my head start clappin'.

The Giant Blast: What does Soy get into besides music?

Soy: Currently I'm a mechanic in training for the US Air Force but when I'm not turning wrenches and marching in 90+ degree heat, I love skateboarding, graphic design, photography, and just buggin out with my crew.

The Giant Blast: Other than Sean J. who else have you worked with?

Soy: I've worked with a lot of talented artists in Orlando including King's Offspring, Angii Albanii (my other half of the Do Gooders), Shinobi Stalin, Mygrane McNastee, MidaZ the Beast, Unique Assassin, Madd Illz, AmIAm, Brown Study, and one of my best friends, Crescendo.

The Giant Blast: How would you describe Sean J. as a lyricist?

Soy: He's a hyper combo hadoken straight from Ryu right into your ear drums. He's one of those cats that ain't scared to say a damn thing or hurt any feelings.

Soy: When I get back to Orlando from training, I'm going to be finishing up school and get back to being a producer.

DiverSe: Just getting by everyday and making music. Finishing Mind Of A Lyricist Vol.3 which will be the last of the mind of a lyricist series. Its 80% done. So I'm feeling good about it.

The Giant Blast: How would you describe your latest single "Highrise".
DiverSe: Actually its not even a single. I just happen to send it to Twist right after I was done with the session and he ended up liking it so much I'm guessing he sent it to some people, but I seen it was the "Blast HOT pic" so I can't complain (laughs).

The Giant Blast: What projects are you working on right now other than the 3rd installment Mind of A Lyricist?
DiverSe: Contributing to the Civil Mics album that's coming very soon and Major & I are back on working on our collaborative mixtape which is untitled as of now, and if god allows it work on my E.P. Fast Food Dreams before the year ends. That's about it (laughs).

The Giant Blast: What's in store for DiverSe for the rest of 2010?
DiverSe: Pretty much working on what I love, music and just everything that comes with it, promoting it, marketing, advertising and all that. Just keep pushing and grinding for a good outcome.

The Giant Blast: What else would you like to plug?
DiverSe: I wanna reach out to the people that've been really patient with me since I haven't released a mixtape since 2008. Its all gonna be worth it, also to my whole Civil Mics fam and the mastermind behind it which is Twist a.k.a the Ken Kaniff of my mixtape, and of course can't forget the Blast Blog for the opportunity and for all the other GOOD music they post everyday. The Giant Blast: What has Random been up to lately?
Random: Well, school is out (I'm also a middle school teacher), so while summer for most means vacation, for me it mean it's time to push the music as hard as possible. Right now I've been promoting my new album Forever Famicom with producer K-Murdock. We just got back from LA for E3 and some other shows. I'm still on a high from that. Now I spend most of my days mailing out CDs, setting up shows, and writing new material ... and when I can, playing X box.

The Giant Blast: In your own words how would you say Random is different from all the other artists?
Random: It's easy for an artist to say "I'm bringing something different to the table," or "I'm different because I think differently," but it's not backed-up by their songwriting. I think just looking at my musical output, my upbringing, the fact that I juggle two very complex careers, and always try to work outside of the box is what makes Random "Random."

The Giant Blast: For those that are unaware how would you describe the Mega Ran series?
Random: Wow... well if you were a fan of the Mega Man videogames on the old Nintendo at all, then you'd know that one thing that always stood out was the impressive music. I decided one day to sample some of my favorite Mega Man tunes, chop em, slice em, throw some drums on them, and create rap songs around the basic premise of the Mega Man games. It was extremely risky, but it was fun, and that was what I needed at that time in my life, was fun. A gentleman at Capcom (the company that makes the games) got a hold of me on MySpace, and told me that they not only weren't going to sue me, but that they enjoyed the music and wanted to help me promote it. That's an awesome feeling.

The Giant Blast: Who did you work with on the Mega Ran 9 project?
Random: Some of my absolute favorite people: beats were done by myself, DN3, Samik, K-Murdock, Fingaz, Ravage and Andre Jackson... Storyville did a little of everything on the project... he rapped, produced and mixed the entire album. I think he did more than I did, haha. Guest vocals were done by Chicago's Pugz Atoms, Ciphurphace, Side Effect, Rufus Pipes and more.

The Giant Blast: Are there any plans of doing a Mega Ran X series in the future?
Random: I can't say a definite yes or no.. ironically, I get beats in my email from a lot of producers who have made beats out of tracks on Mega Man X, and while they're very dope, I'm a sucker for the 8-bit MIDI chiptune sound. If it sounds too realistic, I don't like it as much, haha. So as of now no plans, but who knows what the future holds-- I never even thought I would have done Mega Ran 9.

The Giant Blast: Getting back to Mega Man what game in the series had the best music?
Random: Mega Man 2, hands down. I used most of my favorites from MM2 on the first Mega Ran album, but there are still a few I haven't touched.. Crash Man, Air Man and Wily Stage 1. Maybe one day.

The Giant Blast: What do you have planned for the future?
Random: The future is a mystery right now... In my few years in the business I've learned not to look too far ahead, because you miss the good things about the present. Right now it's all about Forever Famicom. We're talking to a label in Japan about releasing it over there this Fall, even a promo tour in Japan...so fingers are crossed on that. We have a great sprite artist working on some music videos for a lot of the songs on the album, we have some summer tour dates going. That's the immediate future. I'm happy to say that my next album is completed as well, but I'll plug that when the time comes, haha. After all this stuff calms down, I want to write a book in 2011.

The Giant Blast: So far what would you say is your greatest achievement has been?
Random: I don't know if it's happened yet, I've had some amazing moments so far-- getting a full page in Nintendo Power Magazine (April 2010), Performing to a packed house in the Viper Room in Hollywood. Getting a song into a video game (Caster, for PC and iPhone), but I think the best is yet to come. I have dreams and visions of where I see myself going in music, and those haven't come true yet.

The Giant Blast: What has been your worst experience in the music industry so far and how did you learn from it?

Random: Well, I actually talk about it on a song on the new album, "Priceless:" One of the worst moments had to be when RAHM Nation was still local, me, Ohene, and G. performed at a terribly promoted festival where about 13 people were in the crowd (almost as many as were backstage), including 3 elderly folks who had no idea what was going on. Talk about humiliating! But that situation humbled me greatly, and showed me that we had a lot more work to do to get the name out. Making good music is only half the battle, if that: The big fight is getting the word out to the people. Since then I've been working extra hard on promotions, both online and off, and I learn something new every day.

The Giant Blast: What does Random get into besides music?
Random: When I'm not teaching, I love to draw, and I love to play video games. I haven't had much time to do either lately, but those are my main releases from reality.

The Giant Blast: Any future show dates you want to plug?

The Giant Blast: How would you describe your latest project Different Spokes?

Ike Turnah: It's not a album but I intended for it sound like one. It's more of a collection of calabs with other artists and producers from the Charlotte area. Plus it displays two of my favorite artists (Dee richards & Panama Ski) to record and build with on a music tip. It's really just a promo project, but it's a classic still.

The Giant Blast: Who did you work with for this project?

Ike Turnah: Beats done by- D.R., Madwreck, Blaqsmith, Matt Cagle , Sun7 , and Herron and it features emcees Panama Ski, Big Treal, Dee Richards, Kam Moye, Herron, Kil Ripkin, Wolly Vinyl , and Z Doe.

The Giant Blast: How would you describe the feel or the type of sound of this project?

Ike Turnah: Raw hip hop but well polished. A mix of different styles that doesn't conflict but compliments each other. It's a gumbo of street, intelligent, positive, and negitive thoughts that most people have. It shows another side of southern rap music that is rarely heard.

The Giant Blast: Who have you worked with in the past?

Ike Turnah: Who knows? Trends are changing every couple of months in hip hop. It's all depends on what the people want.

The Giant Blast: Speaking of hip hop, how would you describe the North Carolina music scene?

Ike Turnah: Powerful artist, with no major outlet. Also we lack heavy local support, it's hard to take it to the next level, but the talent is solid

The Giant Blast: So far what would you say was one of your worst experiences in the music industry and how did you learn from it?

Ike Turnah: Everything that happens to me has been good. I'm not worried to much about the industry cause I'm going to make money regardless. If you love it you will grow. I've been disappointed before, had some wack shows but that's life.

The Giant Blast: How long have you been singing?

Bri: There's not a time in my life that I cant remember myself singing. Music has always been a part of me. I even have a recording of myself singing a song my father wrote at the age of 3.

The Giant Blast: What inspired you to sing?

Bri: I was born to sing and play music. So it was something that came naturally. I always knew that's what I wanted to do.

The Giant Blast: How would you describe yourself as a vocalist and how do you stand out from all the rest?

Bri: My vocal style and texture is soulful yet very versatile. I like to explore my voice and use it

in different ways that a lot of other artists don't tap into.

The Giant Blast: How would you describe one of your latest singles "Heartbeat"?

Bri: Heartbeat is an uptempo, "danceable" track with a driving beat. It's one of those type of songs that you can really feel and get hype to.

The Giant Blast: For the listeners how would you describe your song "Just A Girl" featuring Gucci Mane?

Bri: "Just a Girl" is a fun take on female empowerment. Its all about how guy should or should not

come at a lady.

The Giant Blast: Other than Gucci Mane, what other artists have you worked with?

Bri: Haven't worked with any other artist yet but my team is currently working toward getting me with some other major recording artists.

The Giant Blast: What producers are you working with?

Bri: I work with team music group. Also I produce and write myself. I'm currently collaborating with a producer by the name of Gerard Thomas (who has worked with Destiny Child, Ashanti, Mel B, Lemar, Missy).

The Giant Blast: Who would you like to work with in the future?
Bri: Well I'm kinda old school. So I can really see myself working with a lot of the greats that came before me including Prince, Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Joni Mitchell. Some have passed on like the late Jimi Hendrix and Michael Jackson, but as far as today's artists go I could see myself working with Neyo, The Dream, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, and Janelle Monae.

The Giant Blast: Speaking of the future, where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Bri: I see myself at the top of the music game. Traveling the world performing, recording and doing

what I do best. Also, I can see myself producing and writing for other artist.

The Giant Blast: Is there anything you would like to plug, any shout outs?

Bri: I want to shout out my manager, Troy Davis. And the engineer who helped me get started early on, Marty Blount. Also my loving parents who always give me their full support.

The Giant Blast: Why do you call yourselves Draztic Meazurz?

Shadow (of Draztic Meazurz): There are no limits to what we are capable of. We are capable of writing anything from show tunes to gritty streets anthems.

The Giant Blast: How did you two meet and what brought you all together?
Shadow: Battle, we went at it back and forth none of us were willing to stop. None of us wanted to give up.
We saw this as an opportunity for great things, so we seized the moment and made a monsterous duo.

The Giant Blast: Are their any plans for solo projects in the foreseeable future?
Shadow: We can't forsee the future, but I'll tell you this, we are both loyal and we both feel that "if you are brought together it's for a reason and you can't mess with fate".

The Giant Blast: How would you all describe your styles individually?
Shadow: Factah has more of a cool,calm,and collected smart flow, you know the type that if you listen to it the first time you won't catch everything he says, too many mind tricks. Shadow has a more rambunctious flow, that in your face take it or leave it type of style.

The Giant Blast: For your forthcoming project Industry Takedown, what can listeners expect on this project?
Shadow: First of all, expect the unexpected. We are attacking you from all angles, with hard lefts, rights, and counters. This is the one. Man we got something for everybody, Ladies Gents Bitches Thugs, haha everybody!!!!

The Giant Blast: Who did you all work with for this project?
Shadow: Kena B, she is the one for real, she writes, arranges and gets busy with the vocals. You gonna hear her trust she's a beast, hailing from Boston, MA.
We also worked with the hard hittin Spot Rush Ent. (Crack Hap and Grizz) The most gritty MC's you'll ever know.
Also Trilla repping 730 dipset and Hardbody Ent. out of ATL. he goes in as well.

The Giant Blast: Who would you all like to work with in the future?
Shadow: I'm tellin' you, we have somethin for EVERYBODY!!!! It doesn't matter who you put us with, we'll still get it in. Ha Ha who do you want to hear us with?

The Giant Blast: What would you say is one of your biggest achievements in the music industry so far?
Shadow: Workin with Squizzy (Producer of Justin Beiber's "One Less Lonely Girl" We are mainly the only hip hop group he works with, that man right there put us on to a lot and he still continues to put us on.

The Giant Blast: What would you say was one of your worst experiences in the industry and how did you learn from it?

Shadow: Ha Ha, the worst, Hmmm, all the broken promises!!!! Not finding beats, not getting show. I think the worst is when we went to 106 and park and the end out side [a certain legendary music producer] was out side listening to some dudes rap. So I burst into the cypher spitting but [he] had to leave off hearing. Next thing you know he turn down the street we walked down and got at us telling us to meet him at the Universal building on Monday. Us being amped we come back out to NYC and they knew nothing about what we was talking about. MAN I was in flames cuz, but you know what we learned to do from now on out, get info, get conformations, and get some type of proof they are serious.

The Giant Blast: Is there anything you would like to plug any shout outs?
Shadow: Shout out to all that supported us and continue to. Shout out Deka Records for puttin us on in the game.

The Giant Blast: How long have you been performing?
Sarai Knowledge: As early as my childhood in New Orleans, so probably at least 5! My mom used to work in the French Quarter and I remember when I would go to work with her I would kick it with the street musicians. I also grew up in church, so I was always singing and performing. In school, I always shot for the leading role in all the plays, took drama classes, vocal lessons, and sang the national anthem at graduations.

The Giant Blast: How would you describe yourself as an artist?
Sarai Knowledge: Most artists probably always say "unique", but if we take a look around and count how many female Filipino hip hop artists there are...well, there's not many there standing! So I would definitely describe myself as versatile with a unique style, influential with maximum potential, inspiring and positively admiring, creative and inventively innovative!

The Giant Blast: What inspired you to get into the recording industry?
Sarai Knowledge: For me music is a gift from God, and to show appreciation for these gifts endowed we need to utilize them to the fullest and inspire those around us. So I knew I needed to take my life long music passion to the next level and put out some serious records in order for my people around the world to hear what I have to say. There's so much struggle in the world today and music is one of the most influential tools, so focusing on bringing out the hopes of the people is what inspired me to seriously get into the recording industry.

The Giant Blast: Who have you worked with?
Sarai Knowledge: Well I must say I've been blessed this early in my career... Phil The Agony of Strong Arm Steady, Chace Infinite of Self Scientific, Afu-Ra of Life Force, Madlib, PF Cuttin, Grammy award winning producer Drew Correa, and I've shared the stage with the legendary KRS-One, Jamaica's dancehall king Delly Ranx, well known bay area artist such as Erk The Jerk, The Jacka, Evenodds and more.

The Giant Blast: Who would you like to work with in the future?
Sarai Knowledge: This would be a loooooong list and I would feel awful to leave anyone out, so let's just say those who have and are continuing to make an impact in the music industry.

The Giant Blast: Speaking of the future, where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Sarai Knowledge: Sarai Knowledge worldwide massive! Being a pillar of strength and pride to my Filipino people, the Asian community, Female emcees, singer/songwriters, and all independent artist who love what they do and strive hard to do what it takes to make it all come true. I see myself being a Grammy award winning singer and songwriter, top billboard chart stacking, platinum selling artist, and one of the most positive and influential women of our times.

The Giant Blast: Where do you see the music industry as a whole in the next few years?
Sarai Knowledge: It's a digital world these days, so the music is in the hands of younger generation. Since we are no longer at the sole mercy of the commercial music industry due to the easy access of independent music, we have the capabilities of choosing what we want to see, hear, and follow. So I see the music industry being more personable. Our favorite celebs will no longer feel like they are unattainable; they will feel more like our friends as we allow our fans to be more involved in our career. So I hope to see us more connected to each other and our fans supporting one another and I hope to see a huge rise in the independent music scene.

The Giant Blast: What does Sarai Knowledge get into outside of music?
Sarai Knowledge: I feel it's important to practice what you preach and walk the walk of you're gonna talk the talk, so I'm always trying to stay spiritually connected and keep my mind elevated. Outside of music, I stay inspired. Staying physically active in the sun, read books, watch documentaries, and attend seminars/workshops. I also stay active in the green movement, cannabis awareness, and conscious living as I find it important to nourish your mind, your temple, and your community. But... this is still all part of my music!

The Giant Blast: Who does Sarai Knowledge listen to?
Sarai Knowledge: I am influenced by so many genres but if I had to narrow it down... The Giant Blast: Could you tell us about the Ketchmore Kids Organization?

Chanell Ketchmore: KK is dedicated to using hip-hop to work with youth and families on positive things, such as self-esteem and gang-prevention.

The Giant Blast: In what ways do you use hip hop to teach positivity to the children?

Chanell Ketchmore: We incorporate hip-hop culture into everything that we do, we lead critical thinking/discussion sessions with youth regarding specific hip-hop songs/lyrics, we encourage youth to express themselves and their creativity through the creation of their own hip-hop songs, we invite special guests affiliated with hip-hop culture in some way, shape, or form to come out and build with the kids. We encourage participation from national and local artists.

The Giant Blast: What activities do you provide for the children during your workshops?

Chanell Ketchmore: Hands-on interactive activities, such as role plays, worksheets, talent sessions, discussion sessions, with hip-hop at the core of everything; hip-hop jeopardy, teaching our youth about the foundation of hip-hop culture, and how this genre of music began as an outlet to express ourselves against poverty, oppression, and other social ills.

Chanell Ketchmore: Inspired by my older brother, and the opportunity to express myself, the energy of the music touched me at a young age,and it came natural to me to express myself this way.

The Giant Blast: What's the theme behind your new song "Calling All Troops"?

Chanell Ketchmore: So many people say that our kids need help and need to change, so my thing is....don't talk about it, be about it. This song is meant to motivate and inspire listeners to do what they can, what is in their power, to help bring about positive social change for our youth, and thus society as a whole.

The Giant Blast: You are also working on a short EP full of songs with positive messages dedicated to the children, who are you working with on this project, and who would you like to work with on this project?

Chanell Ketchmore: J-Coleman is leading the way on this one of course. Coleman has been down for the cause, helping with workshops at the shelter, with school drives, food drives, and anything else needed to help Ketchmore Kids make a difference. Don't wanna work with too many people, just wanna put some good music out there. Just a blessing to be doing what is being done, and I can't take the credit for it, so many help, and provide their positive energy to the music and Ketchmore Kids, the hip-hop social change movement.

The Giant Blast: What types of artists do you listen to?

Chanell Ketchmore: Varies-Taalib Kweli, Jadakiss, T.I. Common.

The Giant Blast: How would you describe yourself as an artist?

Chanell Ketchmore: Conscious street, hood social activist.

The Giant Blast: How would you describe yourself as a person?

Chanell Ketchmore: Passionate, and just humble, appreciative of the little things.

Coach Roebuck is a long time member of our digital record pool, and for all Roebuck's hard work with supporting our Blast featured artists and spinning the music we blast out from our record pool , as well as reviewing different music from our pool, we honor Coach Roebuck by dedicating a section of our Blast Blog to him.

The Giant Blast: Why do you call yourself "Coach" instead of "DJ" Roebuck?
Coach Roebuck: I coached an AAU summer track program in Charleston, WV for three years. When I decided to get into music, I needed a name that stood out. There are simply too many DJs who can't work their systems. They think that because they have Serato Live and they can push a few buttons that they can DJ. Meanwhile, it is not uncommon for me to experience mad technical difficulties and still rock a party, like I recently did in Arkansas. Hence, the name Coach Roebuck.

The Giant Blast: How long have you been spinning?
Coach Roebuck: I didn't start spinning seriously until 2004. I can't believe it's been that long already.

The Giant Blast: What influenced you to become a DJ?
Coach Roebuck: I never thought I'd get involved. I thought I'd be in sports until an injury squashed those dreams, I soon turned to developing music software, but I wasn't able to gain support. While experimenting existing music software, I developed a new hobby in music production. I was remixing 80s music for my own enjoyment. As a way to get my music heard, I decided to become a DJ.

A few key events triggered the beginning of my career as a DJ. I was at a low point in my life, which undoubtedly will make anyone make some drastic changes in their lives. I started educating myself on expectations and anticipations of the music business. Along the way, I encountered a community full of positive and inspiring people. I even came up with a project plan to jump start a music career as a semester assignment in my project management class during grad school. The model apparently, and shamelessly, has seen success.

The Giant Blast: What do you spin?
Coach Roebuck: My preference is underground dance music. My sound is often filtered disco, sampling a lot of 70s music. I occasionally play hard-style techno, too.

The Giant Blast: Where do you spin?
Coach Roebuck: I've been keeping myself busy playing at just about every underground party thrown out here in the Midwest. I'm currently making plans to take my party back to the East Coast.

The Giant Blast: Could you explain "Ghettotech" for the readers? Coach Roebuck: Ghettotech is derived from Booty Bass music and originated from Detroit. It's heavily influenced by Hip-Hop & techno. It often consists of a 4x4 beat, is played twice the speed of Hip Hop, and is very bass heavy. It's different from Miami Bass in that it's more fresh & straight-up dirty. You won't find any cookie-cutting garbage in this genre. To further dig into the music, I recommend checking out DJ Funk, DJ Assault, DJ Nasty, Disco D & DJ Godfather. They're recognized as the forerunners of Ghettotech.

The Giant Blast: How would you describe the style of music that you produce?
Coach Roebuck: In general, my rule of thumb is "If it doesn't apply, let it fly." The production is heavily influenced by house & techno, consists of advanced beats, heavy bass melodies, and filter effects. My style in production is almost as similar as I would DJ.

The Giant Blast: What software do you use to construct your remixes?
Coach Roebuck: I swear by Propellerhead Reason. I've been using it since 2006. It's the ultimate sampling tool. As an added bonus, you can use it as a plugin to use in more superior software such as Ableton, Pro Tools, and Cubase.

The Giant Blast: What are some of the highlights you've experienced in your career as a DJ?
Coach Roebuck: Two years into being a DJ, I played a party in Switzerland. The buzz generated on the East Coast had apparently reached the Swiss Mountains. The way people embrace music overseas is unparalleled.
I've noticed the amount of releases and remixes significantly increased last year. This year's going to be even better. Good times lie ahead for the Coach in the world of production.

The Giant Blast: What were some of the worst experiences you've had as a DJ and how did you learn from it?
Coach Roebuck: I caught Hell in my hometown promoting underground dance music. The community was very apathetic and unresponsive for a long time, and I had a serious hater's club among the locals artists and bands. It's terribly difficult to push any alternative music in most small towns throughout America. But it made for an excellent exercise.
Slowly I began make a name for myself and earn respect. The best decision I ever made was to travel all over the East Coast to meet like-minded people with similar passions for music, and to my surprise, facing similar obstacles in their respective cities. Being conveniently centralized on the East Coast during that time was very beneficial. In a very short time, I found myself playing in parties from DC & Baltimore to Chicago, courtesy of different DJ crews and promoters.

All it took when I finished my travels was throwing one party with some well-known talent. In one night, all the critics shut their mouths. It was a good feeling and a good sense of accomplishment.

The Giant Blast: What advice would you give aspiring DJs?
Coach Roebuck: You better DJ because you love it first and watch your ego or you won't last. I cannot stress this enough. The saying that "Pride seems to come before a man's downfall" can't be more true. I've seen well-known people crash and burn really hard before my eyes. The music industry is cold as Hell. Audiences can be unbelievable and unpredictable. If your name or your choice of music is unknown, it's going to take a lot of patience and perseverance to get ahead. I have become a much happier person and more creative today due to my love of music and remaining a very kind and humble person.

The Giant Blast: Is there anything you would like to plug or shout out?

This week to shine more light on L.E.G.A.C.Y.'s digital exclusive titled "Reckless", we sit down with the producer of the song, North Carolina based beat maker J-Coleman for a blast one on one exclusive interview!

The Giant Blast: How would you describe the type of music that you produce?

J-Coleman: Different. I like to sample different kinds of records, chop them up and rearrange them so that I make it my own.

The Giant Blast: Who are some of your influences as a beatmaker?

J-Coleman: DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Kanye, Pharrell, RJD2, RZA, Timbaland, 9th Wonder the list goes on and on. I mostly get inspired listening to beats by those old golden age boom bap beatmakers.

The Giant Blast: What would you say is the difference between a beatmaker and a producer, and which one do you feel that you are?

J-Coleman: In my opinion, a producer is someone that does more than just manipulate sound, a producer composes something a little deeper than that, and doesn't just have an artist perform over the track, but actually sits down with the artist and has a vision for a song and executes it as a team. The producer in my opinion is like a director and the vocalist is like the actor, and

the beat is like a movie scene. A beat maker is just someone who makes the beat, sends it to the artist and they go their separate ways, leaving the artist free reign to do whatever they want with very little input from the actual beatmaker. By the definitions I just gave, I'm more of a beatmaker than a producer, unfortunately, not by choice but by circumstances. If the artists and I had more time between us, or if there weren't so many other factors involved I would love to get the chance to sit down with an artist and just work on something together as apposed to them picking out beats and we move it along. I'm working with an artist by the name of Chanell Ketchmore, and although we still don't have enough spare time between us to sit down and go back and forth over the direction of a track, right now she is the only artist that I have been able to put some kind of creative stamp on the final outcome of the songs and that's great. Maybe in the future I will get more opportunities like this, to sit down and mold a song with an artist, but so far it's just been the artist getting whatever beat, and we do what we can with whatever allotted time we have.

The Giant Blast: You recently composed the track "Reckless" for Justus League member L.E.G.A.C.Y., what was it like working with him?

J-Coleman: L.E.G.A.C.Y. is great... I'm glad he blessed the track the way he did. I didn't want to make the typical soul sample track for L.E.G., he talks about how he's not just a rapper but a "rock star", so I was inspired to create a rock style beat for him to rock to. With electric guitars and live sounding drums. He murders the beat!

The Giant Blast: Who else have you worked with?

J-Coleman: I've made plenty of beats for independent and underground recording artists over these past couple of years. I've worked with Lubuck, TX based recording artist Slate Stone. I did 3 beats on G.'s most recent album American Scholar. Sug, The One Kemist, Sham Grammar, Stoncity, Reina Williams, R&B singer Dean Thomas, I did the single "So Insecure" for Lady Mae.... um... I've worked with Black Diamond, Yatta AKA Da Kaptain of Race City Records, Concreet, LSP who was featured in The Blaze Battle on HBO years ago (the one that Shellz won and we never heard from again) and the list goes on and on. The Giant Blast: Who would you like to work with in the future?

J-Coleman: Anybody really.... any artist that I'm feeling and that I feel I can gel with and make some magic with, I'm down to do it. Instead of rambling and running off a list of A list artists I fantasize about getting in the studio with like most people do when they are asked this question (and hopefully one day I myself would get to work with those A list people as well), but for a more tangible "this could happen sooner than later" type of answer, I'd say Stitchy C. (Ed E. Ruger's boy), D.R. Universal of No Question Entertainment, Random AKA Mega Ran of R.A.H.M. Nation, D Fitz, some of those other guys, fill in the blank of another artist here and/or all or anybody from Civil Mics Movement, shout out to Twist! That's just a short list of some talented artists that I'd throw some heat to in a minute!

The Giant Blast: Speaking of the future, where do you see yourself as a beatmaker in 5 years?

J-Coleman: Still making the type of music that I love, but only with a longer resume than I have now.

The Giant Blast: While we are on the topic of the future, what projects or records do you have lined up or preparing to release next?

J-Coleman: Like I said earlier Chanell Ketchmore and I are working on an EP. I also plan on releasing some theme based instrumental projects, starting with The Voiceless EP. I have some other projects up my sleeve too. I'd like to do another compilation project too, and this time one where I carefully select different artists for a specific theme instead of just compiling a bunch of random left over joints and putting it all on one thing like I did with The Economic Stimulus Project.

The Giant Blast: Where can artists that maybe interested in your work listen to your beats?
